The wreck cause: <unk> Clearly failed to clear terrain on westbound heading.
Casualties: Capt. Hilton B. Wilcox, Jr.
Lt.Col Merrill E. Smith
Site Description:. 250 feet below the summit of Mt. Tom on the ENE face in trees. Scattered. Radial engines, landing gear, small scraps. No identifiable sheet metal or wing surfaces. Looks like Army dynamited wreck? Or much aluminum was hauled away?
Best route Hiked from Golden Gate Canyon State Park to Mt. Tom summit in order to stay on public land. Ralston Buttes USGS quad
Trip Report: None. Didn't write one. I think it took about 3 hrs from the Park to the site travelling cross-country off trail. A co-worker named Matt Douglass went with me. (Matt is in the pictures) No trail goes in that direction so route-finding is required.
